Calorie

general

A unit of energy.

Definition

A unit of energy. In nutrition, calories (kcal) measure the energy content of food. One dietary Calorie equals 4.184 kilojoules. The average adult needs about 2,000 calories per day.

What Is a Calorie?

A calorie is a unit of energy. In nutrition, the term "calorie" refers to a kilocalorie (kcal) — the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. When a food label states that a serving contains 200 calories, it means 200 kilocalories of chemical energy that your body can extract from that food.

Energy from food comes from three macronutrients: carbohydrates provide 4 kcal per gram, protein provides 4 kcal per gram, and fat provides 9 kcal per gram. Alcohol, while not a macronutrient, contributes 7 kcal per gram.

How Many Calories Do You Need?

Calorie needs vary considerably based on age, sex, body size, and physical activity level. General reference values from dietary guidelines include:

  • Sedentary adult women: approximately 1,600–2,000 kcal per day
  • Sedentary adult men: approximately 2,000–2,600 kcal per day
  • Active adults: 400–600 kcal more than sedentary estimates
  • Children ages 2–3: approximately 1,000–1,400 kcal per day

These are population-level averages. Individual requirements depend on basal metabolic rate (BMR), thermic effect of food, and physical activity.

Why Calorie Quality Matters

Calories from different foods behave differently in the body. 100 kcal from almonds — which come packaged with fiber, protein, and healthy fats — produce a different hormonal and satiety response than 100 kcal from a sugar-sweetened beverage. Nutrient density, fiber content, and food processing level all influence how calories affect hunger, blood glucose, and long-term health outcomes. Focusing solely on calorie quantity while ignoring food quality is an oversimplification of nutrition science.
