포도당(Glucose)이란?
포도당(glucose)은 단순당(단당류)으로, 인체의 주요 에너지원입니다. 자연계에서 가장 풍부한 탄수화물이며 세포의 보편적인 연료로 기능합니다. 빵, 과일, 채소 등 탄수화물을 섭취하면 소화계가 이를 포도당으로 분해하고, 포도당은 혈액으로 들어갑니다.
혈당 농도는 데시리터당 밀리그램(mg/dL) 또는 리터당 밀리몰(mmol/L)로 측정합니다. 대부분의 성인에서 공복 혈당 70~99 mg/dL이 정상 범위로 간주됩니다.
신체의 포도당 이용
포도당이 혈류에 들어오면 췌장이 인슐린을 분비하며, 인슐린은 세포가 에너지로 사용하거나 저장하기 위해 포도당을 흡수하도록 신호를 보냅니다. 세포는 해당과정(glycolysis)을 통해 즉시 포도당을 사용하거나, 나중에 쓰기 위해 간과 근육에 글리코겐으로 저장할 수 있습니다. 글리코겐 저장이 가득 차면 잉여 포도당은 지방으로 전환됩니다.
뇌는 정상 조건에서 거의 전적으로 포도당을 에너지원으로 사용하며, 하루에 약 120 g을 소비합니다. 따라서 안정적인 혈당 수준을 유지하는 것은 인지 기능과 전반적인 건강에 매우 중요합니다.
식품과 영양 표시에서의 포도당
포도당은 과일, 채소, 꿀에 자연적으로 함유되어 있습니다. 영양 표시에서는 '총 당류'로 표시되거나 식품 산업에서 흔히 사용하는 이름인 덱스트로스(dextrose)로 표기될 수 있습니다. 순수 포도당의 혈당 지수(GI)는 100으로, 모든 탄수화물을 측정하는 기준 지점입니다.
